Sony is reportedly planning to produce a remake of Paul Verhoeven's cult sci-fi classic Starship Troopers according to ScreenGeek, citing unnamed sources. Details regarding the release date or further specifics remain undisclosed for now.
The decision may have been influenced by the success of Sony’s online shooter Helldivers 2 which shares thematic similarities with the original movie—both center around humanity's battle against giant alien insects. Following the launch of Helldivers 2 interest in Starship Troopers surged significantly.
However, some online communities question the necessity of a remake.

First, Sony announced an adaptation of Helldivers 2 in January 2025, making it seemingly illogical to release two similar films. Second, past attempts to reboot other Verhoeven classics have met with mixed results. For instance, the 2012 remake of Total Recall scored only 30% among critics and 47% among audiences on Rotten Tomatoes (compared to the original's 82% and 79%). Similarly, the 2014 RoboCop remake garnered 50% and 49%, while the 1987 original earned 92% and 84%. Paul Verhoeven himself expressed disappointment with certain creative choices made in these remakes.
The original Starship Troopers premiered in 1997 as an adaptation of Robert A. Heinlein's novel. Set in the 23rd century, the story follows Earth's conflict with a hostile race of intelligent bugs. On Rotten Tomatoes, the film holds a solid 72% critic score and 70% audience rating. Over the years, multiple adaptations based on Heinlein's 1959 book have been produced, including live-action films, animated series, and video games.
