The successful launch of the PlayStation 4 console allowed AMD to avoid bankruptcy, a risk the company faced at a certain point. This was shared by Renato Fragale, one of AMD's executives, on his LinkedIn profile.

Sony equipped the PS4 with a hybrid AMD processor, which combines a CPU, GPU, and other components, including a video decoder and memory controller. According to Fragale, the console, which sold over 91 million units, became one of the most successful devices the company had worked on.

Fragale mentioned that a team of 15 people worked on the PS4 components under his leadership. He emphasized the critical importance of this project for AMD but did not detail the specific challenges the company faced at that time.

The PS4 was the first PlayStation console to use AMD processors. NVIDIA also considered working on this project. However, after negotiations with Sony, they deemed the collaboration unprofitable. Interestingly, the executive did not specify how much AMD earned from the contract to supply processors for the PS4.
