Universal Pictures has unveiled the first teaser for the highly anticipated continuation of the franchise Shrek 5. The video introduces new characters and confirms the return of the main cast. One of the biggest surprises is the appearance of Shrek and Fiona's daughter, voiced by Zendaya. Joining her is Eddie Murphy, who will once again lend his voice to the beloved Donkey. The film is scheduled for release on December 23, 2026, marking the first full-fledged sequel in the main series since Shrek Forever After, which was released in 2010.
The project is being helmed by a team familiar to fans of the franchise: directors Walt Dohrn and Conrad Vernon, along with co-director Brad Ableson. Walt, who previously worked on scripts and storylines for earlier installments, and Conrad, the director of Shrek 2 and the voice of the Gingerbread Man, promise to preserve the spirit of the original series.
However, despite the high anticipation for the announcement, the first teaser has sparked a largely negative reaction from viewers. Many fans were disappointed with Shrek's new design: his eyes, which are positioned too close together, give the impression that the character was created using neural networks. Additionally, viewers are questioning the absence of Shrek and Fiona's two sons, who appeared in previous films.
The decision to cast Zendaya as the voice of the main characters' daughter has also drawn criticism. Some viewers fear that ogre and other original characters will be relegated to secondary roles, with the focus shifting to the new generation to appeal to a modern audience.
As of now, the teaser on YouTube has garnered 123,000 likes compared to 255,000 dislikes.
