The League of Legends team has acknowledged issues with unlocking new champions during the first act of the 2025 ranked season. Riot Games addressed how changes impacted the amount of Blue Essence earned and shared their plans for fixing the problem in a post on the game’s website.
Players began reporting issues almost immediately after the launch of the 2025 season. Due to the introduction of the new battle pass, Riot removed the ability to earn Blue Essence—used to unlock champions—through leveling up and event rewards. As a result, players estimated that unlocking a single champion would now take 900 hours of gameplay. Riot Games investigated the issue and, a few days later, admitted their mistake. "We meaningfully screwed up," the developers wrote.
According to Riot Games’ data, before the patch, players earned between 4,500 and 37,100 Blue Essence over 60 days, depending on their time spent in-game. After the patch, only players who played fewer than 20 hours over 60 days saw an increase in Blue Essence, gaining 6.9% more. However, all players spending over 20 hours in-game during an event lost between 17% and 71% of their Blue Essence earnings. This happened because Riot Games did not account for the "First Win of the Day" bonus when calculating new rewards.
To address the issue, Riot Games plans to update free rewards and the repeatable missions in the battle pass. Additionally, a simple mission will be introduced in patch 25.S1.3, allowing players to earn a one-time reward of 4,250 Blue Essence. On top of this, Riot will increase account experience gained from matches by 40% to make up for the removal of the "First Win of the Day" bonus.
