If there's one recent PlayStation project that can be called a huge success, it’s not even a game but the PlayStation Portal accessory. The device, which enables portable gaming by streaming on a device with a small screen, has become a massive hit, and it seems Sony is determined to strike while the iron is hot.
Two major sources, Bloomberg and journalist Tom Henderson, have reported that Sony is developing a new portable console capable of running PS5 games. This project is currently in very early development. Because of that, we might not hear any announcements, because the cancellation of the project is always a possibility.
The device is designed to compete with Nintendo’s consoles and could also serve as Sony’s response to potential moves by Microsoft in the same direction.
Interestingly, the PlayStation Portal was initially conceived as a standalone device akin to the Steam Deck. However, Sony ultimately decided to make it solely an accessory for PS5 game streaming. Sony has not commented on the reports, which is unsurprising given that the project is still in its infancy.
It seems portable platforms are poised to become one of the dominant trends over the next five years. Considering the increasing mobility of people today, this move makes perfect sense. And as competition heats up, the real winners will be everyday gamers.
