Bethesda has rolled out a major update titled Ghoul Within for the multiplayer action RPG Fallout 76. This free addition introduces a first-of-its-kind feature in the series: the ability to transform into a ghoul and embrace radiation instead of fearing it. To unlock this transformation, players must complete the quest Leap of Faith set in a new iconic location within the Wasteland.
Simultaneously, Fallout 76 kicks off its 20th season, dedicated to ghouls. As with previous seasons, players will tackle daily and weekly challenges to earn special points, which can be redeemed for rewards in the battle pass system.
Becoming a ghoul isn’t just about aesthetics—it comes with significant gameplay changes and unique perks. Ghouls are immune to hunger and thirst but must manage their "Feralness" stat. They also gain a massive boost to melee combat but suffer from reduced Charisma and health levels.
Radiation, once a threat, now becomes an ally, providing a health bonus to ghouls. Players who don’t enjoy the ghoul experience can revert to their human form, though returning to humanity permanently locks them out of transforming again unless they spend 1,000 Atoms (the game’s premium currency) to retry the process.
While many fans appreciate the new mechanic, some purists feel it clashes with the lore of the original Fallout universe. Despite this, Ghoul Within offers a fresh and engaging twist for players looking to explore the Wasteland in a new way.
