Without modders, the gaming industry would look completely different. The MOBA genre was born from RTS mods (StarCraft and Warcraft III), auto battlers emerged directly from MOBA (Dota 2), and Battle Royale took off thanks to a mod for ARMA 2. That’s why Valve’s latest announcement can only be seen as exciting news.

The company has updated Source SDK, adding the full Team Fortress 2 code to the toolkit. This means that modders can now use Valve’s work as a foundation for creating new games. Yes, according to the license, these games and all content within them must remain free, but we’ve seen time and time again how a popular idea eventually evolves into something commercially viable after finding success.

Valve has also rolled out a major update for all multiplayer games running on the Source engine. These games now support 64-bit executables, a scalable UI and HUD, fixes for client-side prediction issues, and various other improvements.

It’s a big day for modders, and we can only hope that sometime in the future, this leads to something new and truly groundbreaking.
