The creators of Kingdom Come Deliverance 2 have revealed their decision not to include children in the highly anticipated sequel. Executive producer Martin Klima recently shared insights into the team’s reasoning, highlighting both production challenges and ethical considerations.
Initially, the development team at Warhorse Studios considered adding children to the game to enhance realism and diversity among NPCs. However, several issues ultimately led to the decision to exclude them entirely.
From the start, we really wanted to include children in the game," Klima explained. "They could have added variety to the world, as all characters currently look very similar in size and appearance. Children would have helped break that monotony.
There are both production and ethical aspects to consider. If we had included children, but made them invulnerable to attacks, it wouldn't feel realistic or immersive. On the other hand, allowing players to harm them would open the door to morally questionable scenarios. You don't want people creating videos where they toss another body onto a pile of dead children. That would be a PR disaster, and more importantly, it's just not something we want to promote on a human level.
This dilemma echoes the controversies surrounding The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim , where mods enabling child violence sparked outrage within the gaming community. While such content was never officially part of Skyrim, the existence of these mods highlighted the darker tendencies of some players and underscored the risks associated with including vulnerable characters in games.
By avoiding the inclusion of children altogether, Warhorse Studios aims to maintain a balance between realism and responsible game design. This decision reflects their commitment to preserving the integrity of Kingdom Come Deliverance 2 while steering clear of potential ethical and reputational pitfalls.
