Sony published its financial report, and even if you're not interested in the business side of the gaming industry, it is important to keep an eye on such documents. The reason is that money dictates different decisions which might affect common customers.

What is important? The fact that less consoles are sold this year. If we take a look at the interval from April 1 to June 30, the amount of PS5 units shipped is down to 2.4 million compared to 3.3 last year. Total PS5 shipments to date have reached 61.7 million.

Despite the lower PS5 shipments, overall sales of Sony’s gaming division for the quarter have significantly increased, as has operating profit, which rose by 32%. This growth was driven by sales of PlayStation exclusives and revenue from services like PSN. However, the monthly number of PSN users decreased from 118 million to 116 million.

The digital share of all downloaded software increased to 80%, whereas it averaged around 70% in the previous fiscal year.

According to analysts, considering the relatively quiet release schedule this year, Sony's quarterly figures are good. However, the company needs releases like Astro Bot or third-party games to add more incentive for purchasing the PS5.
