Hopoo Games employees, including the studio's founders, announced they joined Valve. As a result, Hopoo Games has halted the development of their unannounced game, codenamed Snail, and appears to have ceased to exist as an independent studio. The developers expressed their gratitude to Valve for its support over the years and promised to continue making games at their new studio.
Notably, the last time Valve acquired a studio was in 2018 when they purchased Campo Santo. Most of the new employees from that acquisition joined the development team for Half-Life: Alyx. This has led to speculation that something similar could happen now, especially with ongoing rumors about active development on a new Half-Life game.
Hopoo Games is best known for the Risk of Rain series, a popular roguelike franchise. However, in 2022, Gearbox acquired the rights to the franchise.
In late August, an expansion for Risk of Rain 2 titled Seekers of the Storm was released. However, players encountered numerous bugs, even in the base version of the game, leading to criticism of Gearbox. The developers acknowledged the issues and promised to address them.
