Sid Meier's Civilization VII was criticized for its significant changes at the time of the first gameplay demonstration, but based on journalists' final previews, the novelty will prove to be profound and won't let strategy fans down.

The seventh part “shakes up” the usual gameplay by combining many mechanics. For example, on the leader selection screen there will be a system, thanks to which the most frequently used by the player rulers will be able to get unique bonuses. And the presence of multiple eras, like Antiquity and Modernity, can provide “isolated” gameplay in each time period.

Main takes:

  • The game features many mechanics new to the series. The ability to choose leaders separately from civilizations adds depth to the gameplay.
  • Three available eras (Antiquity, Medieval, and Modern). Changing eras feels like starting a new game.
  • The game allows you to quickly change the direction of civilization, which adds flexibility to the gameplay.
  • No more laborers - cities now expand themselves.
  • Leaders have been added unique perks that unlock as you play for them.
  • Diplomacy has become a “currency”. Influence points are used to make treaties, form alliances and condemn other leaders.
  • AI is still shitty, so co-op play is recommended.

Gamers believe that Civilization 7 is the boldest attempt to change the classic formula.
