A rumor has begun spreading online that, following the success of Deadlock, Tencent has allegedly approached the developers of League of Legends at Riot Games to create a competitor and allocated around $200 million for this purpose. This rumor gained traction due to a post on Pirat_Nation on X — an account that was caught posting fakes multiple times.

The post included a screenshot supposedly from PC Gamer, claiming there was a deal between Riot Games and Tencent. It was quickly revealed that the screenshot was fake, and no such article existed in PC Gamer — the source of the fake news was a post on 4Chan.

Nevertheless, the fake was significant enough to prompt a response from Riot Games community manager Joe Hixson, who debunked the rumor.

He emphasized that the article and screenshot were fake, Tencent does not fund Riot Games' projects in this manner because "that’s not how it works", and although the studio is working on many different projects, none of them resemble Deadlock.
