A rare look into the development history of Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 has emerged online through a resurfaced pre-alpha gameplay video. Back then, the project carried a much simpler title — We Lost. The footage offers a glimpse of how the game looked in its infancy, including early environments and a prototype version of the battle system.

While the current version of the game showcases a unique, polished combat mechanic, the early system bore resemblance to games like Honkai Star Rail. The visuals, though clearly in a rough state, already hinted at the distinctive artistic direction the final version would embrace.

The footage was originally uploaded five years ago by Guillaume Bouchet, the game’s director. At the time, the video was used as a casting tool to attract voice actors for what he described as an “ambitious AA project.” He sought two male actors and three actresses to join the team. Bouchet later confirmed that he received numerous auditions, though the identities of the actors who ultimately remained in the final release are still unknown.

The video not only highlights how far the project has come, but also provides an intriguing look at how a vision evolves from prototype to a full-fledged game. It serves as a fascinating behind-the-scenes snapshot of Clair Obscur: Expedition 33’s long development journey.
